Enforce enterprise policies on all Shared Drives
Automatically audit and remediate sharing, membership, or content policies across every Shared Drive in a Workspace domain.
| Who it is for | IT administrators and compliance teams responsible for Drive governance. |

| APIs | Drive API, Admin SDK |
| Typical scopes | drive, admin.directory.group.readonly |
The problem
Shared Drives sprawl unchecked, and policy violations—like external sharing or missing retention folders—can persist for months. Manual checks miss new drives and subtle changes, while Google’s native controls are broad but not granular.
How it works
- Enumerate all Shared Drives using the Drive API.
- For each drive, fetch membership, permissions, and content metadata.
- Cross-reference group memberships using the Admin SDK to resolve indirect access.
- Apply policy logic: e.g., remove external users, add missing folders, or update sharing settings.
- Log every action and alert on remediations or failures.
What changes
Policy violations are found and corrected daily, not months later, and every Shared Drive is held to the same standard regardless of owner.
Questions people ask
Can this process handle drives owned by groups?
Yes, but you must resolve group membership via the Admin SDK, and be aware that nested groups add complexity and latency to lookups.
Does this require full Drive access?
Yes, the 'drive' scope is needed for enumerating, reading, and updating Shared Drives and their permissions.
Want this built?
This is a pattern we run in production. We will set up the delegation and build this on top of it — $500 per hour, most of it working the same day.

Alert on unusual spikes in Drive storage or activity
Monitor Drive usage patterns across accounts and notify ops when a user or file set suddenly exceeds typical thresholds.
Monitor external file sharing from a single point
Aggregate and track all files shared outside the domain using a delegated service account, surfacing new exposures as they happen.
Rotate Drive access for external collaborators via automation
Regularly expire and re-grant Drive file access for external users without manual intervention or missed revocations.
