Alert on unusual spikes in Drive storage or activity
Monitor Drive usage patterns across accounts and notify ops when a user or file set suddenly exceeds typical thresholds.
| Who it is for | IT administrators responsible for oversight of storage and file activity across the tenant. |
|---|---|
| APIs | Drive API, Admin SDK |
| Typical scopes | drive.readonly, admin.reports.usage.readonly |
The problem
A sudden surge in storage usage or file activity can signal data exfiltration, misconfiguration, or third-party sync issues. Without automated anomaly detection, these events are often noticed too late to act.
How it works
- Regularly collect Drive usage and activity data via the Admin SDK Reports API and Drive API.
- Establish baselines for normal usage per user or group.
- Detect deviations exceeding defined thresholds within a set time window.
- Send notifications to the ops channel or ticketing system for investigation.
What changes
Ops are alerted to possible issues within hours, rather than after quotas are breached or sensitive data is lost.
Questions people ask
Can this catch both uploads and permission changes?
Storage spikes are visible, but permission changes require separate monitoring logic—use Drive API activity logs in conjunction if you need both.
How granular is the usage data?
Reports API aggregates at the user level, not per-file. For file-level patterns, you must sample or track deltas using the Drive API.
